Like a Lover – Blue Devils Alumni Performance

While working on the “Chase the Clouds Away” virtual brass project this past summer, I thought it might be fun to have a few past members involved performing alongside the current Blue Devil members in the video. When I reached out to the alumni, I was overwhelmed with their quick and enthusiastic response. With that, I decided we needed to do a special project featuring ONLY our incredible alumni. What you are about to enjoy, is made up of Blue Devils representing the A, B, and C Corps, covering every year from 1970 through 2019!

Putting this together over these past two months was definitely a labor of love, but it was more than worth it to once again work alongside these past Blue Devils. 100+ Blue Devils, ranging from current professional musicians to folks who haven’t picked up an instrument in years, or for some, decades! As perfectly stated by 1970’s member, and 2020 participant, Ronny Hirata… "For some, it was a chance to relive their youth, and once again play with their peers. For others, it was an opportunity to give relief from the boredom of shelter in place. And for yet another group, it provided some relief, if only for a moment, of the loss of a loved one, or someone fighting cancer.”

I knew it was important to select a classic Blue Devil chart, one that both the world and I loved, as this would be an important project for our drum corps community, and I would be working with the audio and video editing for hours upon hours! I was in my early teens, and a soloist in the ‘B’ Corps, when my ‘A’ Corps idols were performing Wayne Downey’s great arrangement of “Like a Lover” as their exit in 1984.

The absolute and honest joy of witnessing these 100+ alumni getting together for this project, and once again being a part of this amazing organization, was beyond words, and something I hope to do again sometime in the future.
